A line stopped to wait for a code is slower than any machine on this list. So how fast does an inkjet printer print? In industrial use it runs from 15 m/min on a bench frame to 400 m/min on a CIJ coder, and the number that matters is the one taken at your print height and your drying window.
How Inkjet Printer Speed Is Measured
Coding speed is metres of product passing under the head per minute, not pages per minute. That measurement already contains a trade: the longer the block, the fewer metres per minute the same head covers, because more drops have to land before the next one arrives. How inkjet printing forms droplets sets out why height and rate compete for the same firing window.
Four Real Ranges
| Machine class | Rated speed | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Bench frame, short block | Prints up to 15m/min | Low volume, small cartons, manual presentation |
| Mini online coder | Prints up to 100 m/min | Carton and label lines at a steady rate |
| Online coder with paging | Prints up to 120 m/min | Separated flat packs needing repeatable placement |
| CIJ small character coder | Prints up to 400 Meters Per Minute | High throughput on a moving line with a small block |
The classes are separated by ink delivery and trigger design more than by electronics. A non-contact CIJ coder keeps firing while product moves under it, which is where its inkjet printer rate comes from; a bench frame waits for the pack. The mechanism behind continuous inkjet explains why that class holds the top rate.
What Actually Limits You
Three things cap the practical rate below the rated one. Print height multiplies the drops needed per metre. Throw distance widens the tolerance for product bounce. Ink grade sets the drying window, and on coated or non-porous surfaces that window is the binding constraint. Settle all three against your own pack, and the machine class selects itself.
Speed questions
- Does print height reduce speed?
- Yes. A taller block needs more drops per metre of travel, so the same head that prints a single line fast must slow down when it prints several. Compare rated speed at the height you actually print, not at the single-line figure.
- Is an industrial inkjet printer faster than an office one?
- They are measured differently. Industrial coders are rated in metres of product per minute on a conveyor, where the trigger, the ink grade and the drying window all have to keep up.
- What limits speed on my line?
- Usually the drying window rather than the head. If the pack is stacked or wrapped before the carrier has left the film, the code smears, and the practical ceiling is wherever it stops smearing.
