A misprinted carton is not scrapped; it is overlabelled, shipped and then argued about. A carton coding machine has to hold one block of data across a face that moves, curls and absorbs, and width is exactly where that becomes difficult.
What a Carton Coding Machine Has to Hold
The board is the easy part. Difficulty starts when the face needs more than one print head, because the block is then assembled from separate heads on one bracket, and bracket flex shows up as a step between them. A wide build is lost there: not on resolution, but on alignment held over months of vibration.
Stand-off is next. A 2-5 mm working gap is generous on a small date and tight across 76.2 mm of band, because the far edge is no longer the same distance from the head once a box rides a joint in the belt. Height range then decides whether the block fits in one pass, which the three duties below force first.
Three Carton Jobs Where Width Decides the Build
Three duties recur in export packing, each pushing width differently:
- Ships’ marks and handling symbols Origin, lot and best-before inside one panel, read standing and surviving shrink-wrap.
- Retail cases with a scan face The barcode sits on the same band as the human-readable lines and is printed once.
- Board and profile off a saw Long stock with no flat reference edge, so the head has to follow the part.
All three are won on the same specification, so the four checks below belong in front of a supplier before a price is discussed.
Checking a Carton Coding Machine Automatic Build
Put these four against the quotation, not the brochure:
| Check | What the figure has to settle | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| Band the build holds | Print height across all heads together | Two passes on one face |
| How the band is made | Head count and how heads locate to one bracket | A visible step mid-block |
| Gap under movement | Working gap as a range, far edge measured | Feathering at the outside |
| What it is rated to mark | Whether board, plastic and foam are all named | A grade that beads on film |
The carton coding machine automatic variants that hold a wide band are specified from a sample of your own board; the invoice difference is the bracket and the ink grade, not the electronics. GS1 General Specifications set how lot and best-before sit inside a symbol a third party scans, and ISO 9001 quality management is where a grade is approved against a substrate and recorded, which is described next.
How SHICAI Specifies a Wide Build
SHICAI builds inline coding frames for export lines and specifies a wide job from the customer’s own board: the face is measured where the code is read, the block is printed while cartons move, and head count is fixed by that test, not a catalogue ceiling.
Frames for this duty ride on an industrial protective body in aviation aluminium and stainless steel, and each head is offered in seven ink colours so dark and bright board can run on one bracket. The widest band in the family is the build below.
Questions on carton coding
- Does a wider print band need more heads?
- Usually yes. A single head has a fixed band height, so a wide block is assembled from several heads on one bracket, and what matters is how those heads locate to each other.
- Why does a code print fine on Monday and soft on Friday?
- Because the mount creeps. A bracket that is not rigid enough shifts by a millimetre, the gap changes at the far edge of the band, and the block starts to feather.
- Can one machine handle both board and plastic?
- It can where the grade suits both faces and the drop is given time to set on the non-absorbing one. Board pulls ink in, film holds it on the surface, so drying time is the limit.
